Chrysagon de la Cruex (C. Heston), a Norman knight in the service of a duke, returns to the coastal village of Druid where he previously failed in an attempt to build a defensive fortress. He tries to rebuild the duke's authority against the barbarians on the border and eventually falls in love with Bronwyn (R. Forsyth), one of the women he saved in the region.
Odins (N. MacGinnis), the chief of the village and Bronwyn's father, asks for Chrysagon's permission for his daughter to marry Marc (J. Farantino), a childhood friend. Chrysagon agrees to the marriage but soon regrets his decision as he himself desires to marry Bronwyn.
Meanwhile, war is about to break out on the shores of Normandy.
