Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock), who feels that it is time for a change in her life, decides to leave the local Illinois hospital where she completed her internship and accept a job at a busy hospital in Chicago. The only thing she is sad to leave behind is the beautiful house she rented. Before heading to the city, Kate leaves a note in the mailbox for the next occupant of the house. In this note, she leaves her new address for the letters that will come for her and explains that the mysterious paw prints on the door are still there even when she moves. However, when the new tenant, Alex, arrives at the house, there is no trace of paw prints anywhere. Kate and Alex continue to correspond through the mailbox of the lake house, realizing that they are living in two separate years in an incredible and impossible way.
